This Week on For Perspective: Navigating the AI Landscape

Where to start with AI in 2025? It's a question I get asked constantly.

The AI landscape can feel overwhelming with new models launching every few months.

Terms like "prompt engineering" and "scaling hypothesis" get thrown around casually in tech circles. And the difference between ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok might seem mysterious if you're just beginning your AI journey.

That's why I've created a simple 3-level framework to help you navigate AI regardless of your technical background.

Level 1: Using AI Tools Today

You don't need to be an engineer to benefit from artificial intelligence.

Start by experimenting with user-friendly interfaces like ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, or Perplexity.

Each has unique strengths

  • Claude excels at nuanced reasoning,

  • ChatGPT offers versatility,

  • Grok brings personality

  • Perplexity shines with internet-connected research.

Learning to craft effective prompts is similar to mastering Google search – practice improves your results dramatically. Many platforms offer free tiers that provide substantial capabilities for everyday tasks like brainstorming, summarizing information, or generating creative content.

The best way to learn is simply to start using these tools regularly for practical tasks.

Level 2: Deepening Your Understanding

Podcasts and interviews offer a window into the minds behind AI development.

Listen to conversations with industry leaders like Dario Amodei from Anthropic, who brings both technical expertise and an accessible communication style.

These discussions often explore the balance between advancing AI capabilities and ensuring safety – a critical consideration as models become more powerful. Understanding the perspectives of those building these systems gives you valuable context about where this technology is heading and the ethical considerations being addressed.

This intermediate level of knowledge helps you form more nuanced opinions about AI's trajectory.

Level 3: Exploring Technical Research

For those wanting to go deeper, certain research papers have shaped the field.

The Scaling Hypothesis (that larger models with more data create dramatically better results) continues to drive development. Papers like "Machines of Loving Grace" explore both risks and benefits of advanced AI systems. Organizations like METR collaborate on testing protocols to ensure safety as models scale.

Understanding these technical foundations isn't necessary for everyday use, but provides fascinating insights for those interested in the theory behind the technology.

This research context helps explain why we're seeing such rapid improvement in AI capabilities.

The evolution of AI reminds me of computer hardware development – we're seeing impressive advancements but haven't yet reached the optimization phase. Many professionals still haven't recognized how these tools could transform their work. We're in the exciting early days of a technology that will fundamentally change how we interact with information.

Whether you're just curious or deeply technical, there's a level of AI engagement that's right for you.

My Forever Notes System

After experimenting with various note-taking and productivity systems, I've finally settled on what works best for my creative workflow: Apple Notes with Smart Folders and tags.

Here's why this simplified approach is beating out a complicated Notion setup:

The Power of Smart Folders

  • Smart Folders automatically collect notes based on tags, keywords, or other criteria

  • I've set up folders that gather all my video ideas, podcast research, and gear reviews without manual filing

  • This creates a self-organizing system that requires minimal maintenance

Tag-Based Organization

  • Rather than building complex databases, I use a simple tagging system:

    • #YouTube

    • #podcast

    • #newsletter

  • Notes can have multiple tags, appearing in all relevant Smart Folders simultaneously

The Forever Notes Advantage

  • Everything stays in one ecosystem that syncs reliably across all my Apple devices

  • Native features like voice recording, scanning, and drawing work seamlessly

  • The reduced complexity means I'm actually using the system consistently rather than spending time maintaining it

What note-taking system are you using? Are you team Notion, Apple Notes, or something else entirely? I'd love to hear your approach! Check out my ForeverNotes setup video here.

The News

Is the Apple Way in jeopardy?

Two years ago I made a video called “The apple way: M2 Max mac studio and apple studio display.

But lately apple has come under fire for Siri delays and false promises for Apple Intelligence. So, I have to ask, is the Apple Way in jeapordy?

Surely how Apple handled the Siri update announcement and Apple Intelligence so far has been less than ideal.

Apple has stumbled in the past, but if there is one company that I would not bet against…it’s Apple.

Their hardware and software integration is still top notch and other brands are still fumbling to create an ecosystem that is as seamless and renowned socially as Apple’s.

The flip side is, there is no discounting the fact that Apple is in last place right now among the big tech brands when it comes to AI. This speed bump in the road with the slow and crappy rollout of Apple Intelligence and the delays with the new Siri don’t help that situation.

I maintain hope that Apple will recover from this and ultimately deliver an AI experience that will be class leading, since none of the other companies have the devices to gather the personal context that will be so helpful as AI becomes more powerful and more useful to regular people.
