It’s a new year, but most of us are already repeating old mistakes.
You don’t want to abandon your resolutions by February like you did last year. Most people fail because they set goals based on results they can’t control rather than the systems they can.
Here is how to actually stick to the plan this time.
1. Stop Chasing “Result” Goals
Writing down your goals improves success rates, but only if you’re tracking the right things.
The Trap: Setting a goal like “Gain 1,000 subscribers.” You cannot control who clicks subscribe.
The Fix: Set goals within your control, like “Post 24 long-form videos” or “Record 12 podcasts”.
The Logic: You control the output; the market decides the outcome. Focus on the work you can actually influence.Subscribe now
2. The WOOP Framework
While many use the SMART framework, the WOOP method is often more effective for handling real-world friction.
Wish: Identify a goal that truly excites you.
Outcome: Detail exactly what success looks like and how it feels.
Obstacle: Be honest about what will hinder you (e.g., “I’m awkward on camera”).
Plan: Create a specific “If/Then” strategy to overcome those hurdles.
3. Silence is a Superpower
The simple act of posting “I’m going to the gym every day” on social media can actively hinder your progress.
Your brain receives a “dopamine dump” the moment you press publish, simulating the feeling of achievement without the actual work. This “Announcing Trap” often kills motivation for the follow-through. Instead, keep your goals in a private notes app and only share them with a trusted accountability partner.
4. The Waterfall Approach
Don’t let big goals overwhelm you; break them down into a manageable “waterfall”:
Yearly: 24 Videos.
Quarterly: 6 Videos.
Monthly: 2 Videos.
Weekly: Generate 5 ideas and write 1 script.
5. Simplify Your System
Consistency dies in complexity. If your notes are in one app, your tasks in a second, and your calendar in a third, you’ve already lost.
Centralize everything—ideas, goals, and daily wins—into a single notes app. Small, daily progress compounds into massive success, provided you have a simple place to track it.
