July 2025 App of the month is Halide

I finally caved and bought Halide. I’ve been testing out the different shooting modes and overall it is a really well put together application.

It has all the professional controls you have come to need, but packaged nicely on your iPhone.

Halide also supports all of the latest and greatest Apple hardware features, including the action button and camera control.

Sure it is a subscription and that will turn some people away. Though it also has family sharing, which is almost a moust have in my household when it comes to subscriptions through the app store.

Luckily there is still a one time payment option as well, for those of you too stingy to pay for great development and support the hard work of the teams that power your favorite software.

Halide features a film like mode called Process Zero, which produces some really amazing results out of the iPhone camera. Everyone knows the more filmic your photo looks the better it is these days!

You also get the normal Apple Processed image pipeline, the same as your stock camera app, but with all of the manual controls in Halide.

Finally you can do RAW photos as well and even enable RAW + HEIC where you can save both at the same time, which is basically like having a RAW + JPG workflow from a professional camera, but on your iPhone.

I appreciate more controls for my iPhone camera since I’m taking more photos than ever with the device that goes with me everywhere.

Creator Heartbeat

With some life changing events I paused the podcast and newsletter, but we are back… sort of.

I am trying to figure out the future of both of these things. I’ve always wanted to do guests on the podcast from the beginning, but started out solo, because I had to just start.

While I’m busier than ever it feels like breaking from Season 1 after 12 episodes plus a bonus is a good jumping off point. For Perspective will be back for Season 2 as soon as I can setup a schedule that will be consistent, probably for another 12 episodes.

The newsletter on the other hand is one of my least subscribed to platforms. I love writing it, but I might continue posting and ghosting on Substack and take an abridged version to Threads. Follow me there if you don’t already and you can keep up on Sunday with almost all of the same content!

I’ve not listened to many podcasts or watched nearly any YouTube over the past 6 weeks. I have still caught my frieds at the Basic AF show though. The bi-weekly mostly tech podcast, I love tuning in to hear Tom and Jeff banter about tech, mostly.

If you haven’t checked them out be sure too, hopefully I can get back on soon for a guest episode later on this summer!
